Tylite,
Inc. announces cost-effective Ethernet fiber network product and
design
|
|
Demonstrates
patent-pending proof of concept for fiber networks
|

|
Spokane, Washington, July 11, 2002
- Tylite, Inc., a Pacific Northwest company that aims to be the
premier architect of high-speed Ethernet over Fiber networks, today
announced they have developed a subscriber demarcation box and fiber
optic system design that provide economical delivery of Internet and
broadcast video services over an Ethernet fiber network.
This product will be used in the deployment of networks by
municipalities, Public Utility Districts (PUDs) and residential
developers.
In designing this new product, the company assessed the requirements
for an economical system build-out, without sacrificing robustness
or maintainability, and incorporated a customer base of residential,
business, education and governmental users. The product design
required support of all current information transfer capabilities,
i.e., Internet, multi-channel multi-viewer television, and telephone
service, at the same price/performance level of today's copper
telephone line service.
In addition, Tylite's design allowed for cutting edge and future
applications, such as super-high-speed Internet (Gigabit speeds and
beyond), High Definition Television (HDTV), video conferencing,
video telephony, remote control and security, and a host of
applications only dreamed of today. The system also had to be
"future-proof"; that is, be able to handle the
technologies that will be available in the next twenty to thirty
years without a network rebuild. Finally, it had to be as
cheap or cheaper to build as the current costs of building a cable
TV system.
The Future Proof FiberTM (FPFTM) demarcation box is a low-cost
device, incorporating a minimal hardware design that is very
efficient to install and service, but still meets stringent
environmental and accessibility regulations. The economical
price tag of this device allows Tylite to design very
cost-effective, symmetric Ethernet networks.
The FPF demarcation box provides an uplink connection to a fiber
network, with a standard TV coax interface and a standard RJ45 data
link to the residential, business or governmental user. These
end user links provide full-duplex 100 Megabit per second (Mbps)
bandwith for voice, data and video functionality. The product
is powered via the Ethernet network, and can be combined with an
indoor Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for continual operation in
a power outage.
The FPF is part of a patent-pending fiber network architecture that
provides very cost-effective implementation. The design
eliminates the need for an expensive set-top box within the
residence since it carries broadcast video directly from the service
provider, over the fiber network, to the subscriber's television.
"Our FPF demarcation box, combined with a proprietary fiber
network design, enables Tylite to design, build and operate very
cost-effective networks for smaller communities," said Jim
Wilson, President and CEO of Tylite. "It does not replace
a home gateway switch, where switches or some types of Voice over IP
are required. A switch will work fine in conjunction with the
Tylite FPF box.
"Network system cost modeling tools will be available on our
Web site at www.tylite.com. Municipalities with populations of
5,000 to 100,000 will find that they can install a future-proof
communications infrastructure for about 50% of the cost of other
networks."
Interested parties are invited to schedule appointments by
contacting Tylite/Ptera Wireless at 509.927.7837, Jim Wilson at
509.294.1174 or via email to jwilson@tylite.com.
"True fiber to the home networks are now financially
feasible," said Fred Bielen, Tylite's Vice President of Network
Engineering. "Our cost justification models show that
revenues solely from Internet services will support this fiber to
the home network design. Other fiber to the home designs depend on
high take rates and revenues generated by Internet, video and
telephony, plus an expensive set-top box will be needed just to
watch basic television channels."
Bielen added, "We expect to have production models of the FPF
demarcation box available in the early fall timeframe."
Tylite is seeking additional investment funds for the production
phase of their new product.

Tylite, Inc. announces corporate launch and management team leadership |
|
Spokane, Washington, February 1, 2002 – Tylite, Inc., a recently formed company in the Pacific Northwest that aims to be the premier architect of high-speed Ethernet over Fiber networks, today announced they have developed innovative network design techniques that enable cost-effective and immediate deployment of new generation networks.
Founded in response to the emerging need for technical expertise in the design and development of high-speed networks, Tylite brings the crucial price/performance aspect of a network to a new level. “There are a number of critical issues involved in a well-planned and well-executed network deployment”, said Jim Wilson, president and CEO of Tylite, Inc. “Network operators don’t always have the expertise on staff to address those issues. With our team’s experience in telephony, video and fiber networks, we understand the importance of having the right equipment in the right place and we’ve developed systems that can be deployed today – not just in the future. Our designs allow our customers to deliver the services they desire, at a price they can afford now, cost comparable to HFC but with ultra high speed symmetrical Ethernet over fiber to the home or business.”
Tylite’s clientele includes school districts, utilities, municipalities and real estate developers.
Chris Heftel, president of River Bluff Ranch, a rural Spokane-area residential development
(www.riverbluffranch.com), says, "Our customers are looking for more value-add in their home purchases. A community network delivering Ethernet services over a fiber-optic infrastructure allows effective, high-speed telecommuting, without the delays and costs associated with alternative infrastructures like copper phone lines or coaxial cable - especially in rural areas. The further you are from the central office, the slower the speed of your connection." Chris adds, "With fiber and Ethernet, there's no delay. In fact, it's multiples faster than if you were sitting in the central office. Tylite designed a network for River Bluff Ranch that will prepare us for the future."
While Tylite’s portfolio of products and services includes consulting, full network design, deployment and operation, they also provide troubleshooting services on existing network issues.
Nationally recognized Spokane School District 81 (SD 81) was one of the first Tylite clients. They were experiencing echo, delay and PBX problems with an original voice gateway product on their Educational Metropolitan Area Network
(EMAN). The Tylite team tested and installed an alternate technology that not only resolved these problems, but also saved the school district a significant amount of money. The solution, based on TDMoIP (Time Division Multiplexing over IP) technology, provided the school district with transparent T1 circuits over their IP network. Tylite's ability to identify the correct solution, vendor and product - in this case, TDMoIP gateways from RAD Data Communications as implemented in their IPmux product line - has withstood the test of time. Dennis
Schweikhardt, Manager of Technology Infrastructure for SD 81 confirmed, "We are experiencing excellent quality voice over our Gigabit network."
Management Team
Led by a group of entrepreneurs experienced in network design and transmission, Tylite’s mission is to offer a wealth of services and connectivity options that enable cost-effective build out and maintenance of Ethernet over Fiber networks. The Tylite management team possesses a full array of technical expertise, business acumen, leadership skills and startup experience. Jim Wilson, president and CEO, has over twenty years of experience at prominent high-tech companies, including Packet Engines,
Divicom, Pixar, Unisys and Hewlett Packard. Fred Dunham, senior vice president, with a JD/MBA from Gonzaga University, previously practiced business law and led a computer software firm. Fred
Bielen, PE, Tylite’s vice president of Network Engineering, has over thirty years of telephony and fiber design experience at AT&T, Mountain Bell, US West International and
Qwest. As a complement to their team, Tylite utilizes the services of several well-known industry consultants as well.
Jim Wilson adds, “While we have been very successful with our original business model of consulting and integration services, we’re also in the process of developing hardware products that will add another layer of functionality to our network designs. We anticipate announcement of those products late 2002.”
